So I have finally got round to pulling together a full New Year update. I mean I am only 3 weeks behind into January right? That’s not too bad? Right? Right!?
It had been a frantic last quarter of the year as I mentioned in my previous update (that was mean to go out in October but was actually posted in January…!) but I thought I could give an update of what I have been doing from a hobby perspective.
Warhammer 40k
So to start with, what have I been up to from a Warhammer 40k perspective?
Well over the winter period I have built my second Imperial Knight Helverin (you saw the first one in my last post) as well as the Primaris Helblasters built using the heavy plasma incinerator variant, not because it is the most effective, but just because I think it looks really cool!
As you know from my previous update I also picked up a copy of the Tooth & Claw boxed set (I was fortunate enough to get sent a second copy of the box by accident from Darksphere who were gracious enough to let me keep it!) so I built the Genestealer cult models from this and split the Primaris Space Wolves to my friend Robin who happened to be building a Space Wolf Primaris army at the time. I really love the new Abberrant models as well as the especially impressive Abominant! I am really looking forward to using this army once the new codex comes out which is now coming very soon!
Finally this week just gone my resolve crumbled and I picked up the new Primaris Marneus Calgar with his Victrix bodyguards. I love this model and love the character behind it. I am also looking forward to using him with my Primaris Ultramarines as it does mean you don’t have to use Roboute Guilleman if you want a name character in a Primaris army.
Necromunda
A lot has been going on on my hobby desk when it comes to Necromunda! With the release of the new compilation rulebooks as well as the Gangs of the Underhive and the final classic gang, House Delaque, I couldn’t help but get excited about it all over again!
I did end up picking up the new rulebooks as I have to say, it is much easier to follow when the rules are contained in just the two books rather than the 5 previously! However one thing that was a little disappointing was not every mission that has been released in the past was in there, and the original Turf War rules were replaced with just the Dominion style campaign. We have a new campaign beginning in a few weeks so I will keep you updated with how I get on!
I painted up a couple of new gangers for my Goliath gang which you can see below as I am planning on running a Goliath gang for this new campaign. I had originally planned to run an Escher gang (more on that below) but found out there were a few Escher players already and no Goliath players so figured I would keep the variety levels higher!
As I mentioned previously I had planned on building and running an Escher gang to try something new so although I had my initial Escher gang from the starter box (built as the box recommends) I knew I wanted to run a different build so I picked up a new box of Escher gangers as well as the Forge World weapon pack 2. I built some new gangers which you can see below as well as a test paint scheme of a ganger.
I was a bit gutted as a week or two after I had built these guys, the head packs came out and they would have been great to use. As it is one of the club members went down to the New Year Open day and could only pick up one pack of Escher heads so I let the other guy running an Escher gang take them for now. However I did pick a pack of the Orlock heads, as well as pack 1 of the Goliath heads, the one with all the masks which I think look really cool.
Also since we last spoke, I also picked up a Goliath Sump Kroc as I love that model, and hopefully will get a chance to use it in the upcoming campaign! I also picked up Kria the Huntress, the Escher bounty hunter, but have yet to build her.
Finally, I am sure you have all seen the previews of the new Ambot models! Are you as excited as I am? I think they look fantastic and I can’t wait to pick up a box! Plenty to look forward to with Necromunda and Games Workshop and Forge World seem to be giving it plenty of support, with the new head range a fantastic surprise addition which nobody was expecting.
Warhammer Quest
My friend Phil and I have been playing through Warhammer Quest: The Silver Tower (we have completed 5 of the 8 trials) so I have had an urge to paint the models in the box. As you may know early on in my blog I began painting the miniatures and started with the 6 heroes that you can play as. I am finally getting the foes you face throughout the game completed!
So since I last posted I completed painting the rest of the Kairic Acolytes, as well as all the blue horrors (including an additional 3 that came with my Exalted Flamer box set I bought to add the models as exotic adversaries), the 2 Pink horrors and all 8 Familiar models! Wow! I don’t think I have been this productive on one painting subject in a long time! Take a look at some of them below.
So what do I have left? Well I have the 6 Tzaangors, the Ogroid Thaumaturge and the big bad himself, the Gaunt Summoner. Well…from the original box anyway. I also have 3 Flamers, 2 Screamers an Exalted Horror and Exalted Flamer from the exotic adversaries I added…as well as all the additional heroes I have picked up…oh boy…
Well I am still really pleased with how far I have got through the box and I am aiming to complete it as soon as possible, with the additional adversaries and heroes being models I can paint in between other projects when I have a bit of a painting block.
On an exciting note, I also picked up the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress boxed set! I can’t wait to play my first game of this. I have built all the models and they are definitely something I want to start painting soon in preparation for once Phil and I complete Silver Tower! They are such a beautiful set of models and it looks really expansive and similar yet different to the Age of Sigmar equivalent.
Looking forward into 2019
2019 already looks like an exciting year for the wargaming hobby, especially with some of the stuff I have discussed above. I am really looking forward to the new Genestealer Cult models and codex being released as they just look brilliant, especially the guys on motorbikes and quad bikes running around the battlefield with a Mad Max feel to it.
Another exciting development is the upcoming expansion for Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress – The Dreaded Ambull! I love that GW are already putting support behind this great game, and linking it into the existing universe as we can see with the new Necromunda Ambots being teased at the same time! I will definitely be picking this up when it comes out so hopefully I can get some games under my belt and get some of the original boxed set miniatures painted up!
I think I will leave it there for now. As you can tell I have been up to a lot and been keeping very busy from a hobby front. What have you been up to in the New Year? What are you looking forward to in the year ahead? Let me know in the comments below!
